Level Flow

(1) Drop outside of Enemy Base

(4) Plant the explosives

(2) Dispatch Guards and advance into the Base

(5) Defend against incoming waves of Reinforcements

Base Combatants

Combatants defending the base are your standard run of the mill shooter enemies. I made sure to provide an intro encounter that properly breadcrumbs the player to the base. I then followed it up with enemies set up on three “lanes,” each at a medium, close, or far distance from the player and equipped with weapons appropriate to their distance. Setting these enemies up in lanes enabled me to reuse the areas they populated with Transport Trucks later in the level.

(3) Ascend the Railway Gun and fight enemies along the way

(6) Leave immediate area and blow Railway Gun

Production

I was tasked with designing various Missions across the game. One of my favorites to work on was Mighty Gerta. This level involved a lot of collaboration with ExDev Environment Artists. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to get our enemies into very unique positions and placements for combat encounters.

Railway Gun Combatants

Combatants defending the railway pulled from a pool of spawns both on the Railway Gun and behind it. As the player advanced, they’d fill the periphery of the Player’s screen with enemies. As the player ascended, the player would be surprised with enemies in the nooks and crannies of the Railway Gun. Short range weapons led to crisp gunfights that encouraged players to use the sparse cover.

Transport Trucks

We ran into the issue of enemies not having anywhere to spawn from in the existing level since the player cleared it on the way up the Railway Gun. I suggested, prototyped, and implemented special Transport Trucks that were able to drive into the level, and drop off reinforcements. They felt good to shoot, and had the trade off mechanically of if you prioritized them in combat, they wouldn’t add additional enemies to the current encounter.
